Dancing Anatomies

Axis Syllabus Tools for Movement Research and Contact Improvisation

Facebook Event Page for Additional Info (published soon).

ABOUT

This workshop applies functional anatomy concepts and principles to solo movement research and shared contact dancing. We’ll give special focus to the structure, intelligence and use of the Living Spine for more aligned, powerful and expansive movement.

The spine has 33 vertebrae and connects to many neighboring structures. It provides crucial support but is also mobile, working as a collective at the center of the body. Used in alignment, the spine can give tremendous support for partnering in CI, acrobatics and other dynamic weight-bearing practices.

For anyone with a dance or movement practice. All levels welcome!

Sebastian has been teaching dance and healthy movement principles since 2007. He recently moved to Copenhagen and is excited to share this work here. Learn more about Sebastian below.

TEACHER BIO

Sebastian Grubb is an award-winning dance artist and movement coach based in Copenhagen and California. He choreographed, performed and toured contemporary dance works throughout the U.S. and overseas from 2007-2019. This included 10 years as a principal dancer and assistant teacher for Scott Wells & Dancers, a modern dance-theatre performance company centering athletic Contact Improvisation in its artmaking. It also included 6 years as a principal dancer and teaching artist with AXIS Dance Company, a modern dance repertory company whose work has helped revolutionize the professional dance world by resourcing the perspectives and contributions of physically disabled artists.

After a multi-year mentorship with Frey Faust, Sebastian became a certified Axis Syllabus Teacher in 2011, and began teaching biomechanics and functional anatomy principles within a dance context. In 2018 he founded Agile Beast, an updated fitness training program that integrates modern biomechanics with foundational movement patterns. And in 2019 he co-founded Spiral Camp with Shira Yaziv. Spiral Camp teaches movement and dance skills within a playful learning environment that empowers students and builds community.
